Real estate and environmental law attorney focused on sustainability and green building.

Stuart Kaplow is an attorney and the principal at the real estate boutique, Stuart D. Kaplow, P.A. He represents a broad breadth of business interests in a varied law practice, concentrating in real estate and environmental law with focused experience in sustainability including green building and buttressed by his experience as an environmental entrepreneur.

Kaplow is a frequent motivational speaker and keynote on innovative solutions to the environmental issues of the day, including speaking to a wide variety of audiences on the topics of recarbonizing the economy and business greenhouse gas reduction targets. He has authored more than 1,000 articles centered on his philosophy of “environmental risk as an opportunity” for businesses and other organizations with real estate in their portfolio, including recently “All Solar Panels are Pervious in Maryland” and “PFOA and PFOS are Now Hazardous Substances under the Superfund Law, so ..”

Kaplow for more than two decades served as an adjunct Professor of Law, at the University of Baltimore School of Law, teaching the advanced real estate transactions course.

Stuart Kaplow was voted the “Best Personal Lawyer” by the readers of The Daily Record, Maryland’s daily business and legal newspaper. Kaplow was also voted to The ‘A’ List of 20 “Favorite Business Lawyers” in a poll of The Daily Record readers. He was selected by his peers as the real estate attorney among “Maryland’s Legal Elite” in Baltimore Smart CEO magazine in 2005 and again in 2006. Kaplow has been named as a Maryland “Super Lawyer” each year since 2007 including this year. Superlawyers Business Edition has also named him, as a solo practitioner, the top law firm for construction and real estate in Maryland.

He is AV® Peer Review Rated, the highest rating for ethical standards and legal ability, as administered by Martindale-Hubbell.

Kaplow was selected by the American Bar Association as one of ten Legal Rebels for his work in creating and advancing the emergent body of law that is green building and sustainability law.

Stuart Kaplow was elected chair and for years provided pro bono legal counsel to the U.S. Green Building Council Maryland.

Kaplow has been asked to serve on a wide variety of boards and panels across the country and internationally, including having been appointed by two Maryland governors to chair the government Maryland Green Building Council.

He has successfully briefed and argued a number of precedent setting cases before appellate courts.

A native of Florida, practicing law in Maryland since 1985, Kaplow is a graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law, having earned a Juris Doctor degree in two years. He graduated with honors from the University of Maryland, Division of Behavioral & Social Sciences, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in urban studies.

Kaplow is active in the philanthropic and charitable community and serves on the board of Building STEPS, a not for profit that exposes bright, underserved high school students to science and technology based careers. He is the co-founder of Prologue, one of the largest nonprofits in the Baltimore area providing residential and psychosocial treatment to chronically mentally ill individuals.

If there is any question about his fortitude and strength of will, Kaplow has trekked and climbed some of the wildest real estate on the planet from Kilimanjaro to Everest and K2, with many summits and mountaineering adventures in between.
